Berkley History

The land where Berkley, MI is situated used to be mostly dense forest and swampland. Most people didn’t see any of the land north or west of the city of Detroit as a place that could be uninhabitable because of the harshness of the area’s swamps. However, some braved the treacherous area and discovered lovely scenery. People found good farming country north and west of Detroit and began flocking to the area. At this time the area was known as Royal Oak. The land, known as Berkley, was eventually sold to the farmers who made the land ready for farming. During the 1840s there were quite a few dairy farms in Berkley. During the 1910s the area continued to grow once Highland Park Ford Plant was completed. Farms were sold and eventually became subdivisions. Once this happened, Berkley was incorporated in 1923 as a village in Michigan.

Most of Berkley is operated by Berkley School District. The Berkley School is first mentioned as a part of the Royal Oak Township School District #7 in the year 1840. In the fall of 2002, the district “Restructured for Success.”  Avery Elementary and Norup Middle School were re-configured to serve children 6 weeks-2nd grade and grades 3-8, respectively. In 2018, both the Tyndall and Avery early childhood centers combined into one at the former Avery Elementary School site. This new center opened in August 2018. The Tyndall center was renovated to house only the administrative staff beginning in January 2019. Some of the schools in the district:

Angell Park – This 2.7-acre park is located at Wiltshire between Bacon and Cummings. It has a basketball court, ball fields, playlot, picnic area, tennis courts, and public parking

Community Park – This is a 17.9-acre park situated at Catalpa between Gardner and Robina. There are several ball fields, playground, horseshoe pits, jogging and fitness trails, tennis courts, public parking, snack bar, and restrooms

Jaycee Park – Jaycee Park sits on 2.7 acres at Webster between Bacon and Phillips. It is known for its playground and its lovely picnic areas. There is public parking available.

Kiwanis Tot Lot – This small 7-acre park is ideal for families with small children, as it has a playground and a suitable picnic area.

Lazenby Field – This is another small park at just 2-acres, located at Oxford between Berkley and Henley. It is a ball field with public parking.
