Early pioneers settled in the area now known as West Bloomfield at the beginning of the 1800s. Most of the people immigrated from England, Ireland, and Scotland. The first recorded settler of West Bloomfield was John Huff in the year 1821. Three years later, in 1924, he bought land in West Bloomfield.
The largest period of growth for West Bloomfield was marked by the post WWII economic boom—where many middle class families settled in suburbs like West Bloomfield. Families flocked to the area until the early 1970s. During this time much of the farmland in the area developed into communities, businesses, and other suburban amenities we see today.

For excellent shopping in West Bloomfield, you have a number of choices. The most well known malls include Bloomfield Plaza, and the Orchard Mall. Bloomfield Plaza has a large selection of local businesses to choose from. Here you can do your grocery shopping, get a bite to eat, visit the drug store, and buy a pet all in one afternoon.
The Orchard Mall is another fun shopping center that is much smaller than Bloomfield Plaza, but provides shoppers with a clean, safe place to go shopping. It’s not only a great place to shop, it’s a great place to hang out with the family.
West Bloomfield has a variety of foods to taste, including Mediterranean, Chinese, American, Japanese, and modern fusion. One of the town favorites for Japanese food is Kaku Sushi & Poke, where you can get fresh seafood as well as a variety of other items. If you are looking for a bouquet of Asian flavors, you can check out Szechuan Gourmet, a go-to takeout restaurant serving up authentic Chinese food.
For a high end eatery, Bill’s is the way to go—it’s a place where you can get old school American, French, and Italian food in a classy environment. Last but not least is Cafe ML, where you can try contemporary American food with an international twist.
