Southfield History

The first settlers to the area were from other parts of Michigan and as far away as Vermont and New York. Southfield was settled in 1823 by John Daniels. The founders included the Stephens, Heth, McClelland, Thompson, and Harmon families. The original name of the area was Ossewa Township but shortly after it was initially organized on July 1830, the name was changed to Southfield Township. The first US post office in the area was established in 1833 with the first town hall being built-in 1873. The areas fire department was formed in April 1942 and the police department was established in 1953. The existing city hall was built in 1964.
