The Rochester Hills community was originally known as Avon Township when Michigan was admitted as a State in 1837, you can see this name origin throughout the community. Rochester Hills History

The first settlers in the Rochester Hills area were Native Americans. They lived in the area until 1807 when the government forced them to cede their land. The first European settler to the area, James Graham, arrived in 1817. Rochester was incorporated as a village in 1869. In 1966 the village became the City of Rochester. Avon was a part of the original village but in November 1984 Avon Township became the City of Rochester Hills.
