History of Novi

The City or Novi started in 1832, and was called Farmington. It was established as a city in the late 1960s under the name “Novi.” Rumor has it that the people were looking for a name that wasn’t quite as long as “Farmington.”

In 1969, Novi was officially organized as a city in 1969. This charter was approved after the election in 1968, where voters clinched the incorporation of the city with a total tally of 694 votes to 283 votes. Before this became official on the 24th of February in 1969, there were a few failed attempts at approving the incorporation of the city—where voters shot down the incorporation. Since then the city has maintained the same boundaries that the city holds today.
